Oporto in the north of Portugal is the second largest city in the country after Lisbon and is considered to be the capital of industrialized production.
Oporto which is named O Porto in Portuguese is the conjugation of O (The) and Porto and acquired its name from the Portuguese word for port.
The administrative area of Porto which covers 41.66 km² includes a population of approximately 230,000 inhabitants who are located within the following fifteen Parishes:
Aldoar, Bonfim, Campanhã, Cedofeita, Foz do Douro, Lordelo do Ouro, Massarelos, Miragaia, Nevogilde, Paranhos, Ramalde, São Nicolau, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Vitória
The urbanised area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.1 million within an area of 389 km2 making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal.
Oporto which is located along the Douro River and Estuary is one of the oldest European cities with settlements dating back several centuries to when it was an outpost for the Roman Empire.
The OPorto area is the largest producer and exporter of port wine, with over fifty adegas being based in Vila Nova de Gaia south of the river.
Oporto is a wonderful city to visit with sights, entertainment and attractions for all types of visitors and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 because of its historic centre.
