In 1498 when Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India the Portuguese “Golden Age” began. This was characterized by the Manueline architecture with its typical use of maritime motifs.
After the earthquake in 1755 which all but totally destroyed Lisbon, the city was rebuilt by Marquise de Pombal whose strong influence can still be seen today.
