History

Bronze Age                                        Alcaçer was the centre of political and commercial activity.

Roman 264 - 409 AD                       Salacia was the given Roman name for Alcaçer and was an extremely important port of imperial commerce. Exports included wine, oil and fish with local economic activity including brick production and fish salting.

Visigoth 409 – 711 AD                    Little documentation is available for this period however it is believed that the area returned to local commerce and a traditional village way of life.

Muslims 711 – 1217 AD                Al-Qasr was the given name for Alcaçer which again became an important centre for commerce and a strategic military port.

Order of Santaigo

1217 – 1550                                     D. Afonso II with the help of the Order of Santiago was able to re-establish Christian rule over this area which continued to play an important role in the area of trade and commerce.

Modern age 1550 – 1759               The local authority with detriment to the order of Santiago took charge of this locality with salt becoming the area’s largest export. A large part of what is now Herdade da Comporta was not commercialised.

1759 – 1925                                   Prior to the area being given the name Comporta, it was once known as the House of Aveiro which in time was incorporated into the House of Infantado. This era saw the beginning of rice production which then moved into a more industrial form of production. The management companies at this time were the Company Lezirias of the Tejo and Sado including HdC which were then privatised.

Atlantic Company

1925 – 1955                                   The Lezirias company sold the herdade to the Atlantic Company who tried to transform part of the herdade into further rice cultivation which included the local population from Comporta, Torre, Carrasqueira and Carvalhal. The investment for the manufacturing of the agricultural equipment came from an English Company.

1955 – 1974                                    In 1955 the Atlantic Company was passed to the family Espirit Santo. This proved productive for the land and bettered the lives of the local population. Espirit Santo constructed neighbourhoods for the locals which included three schools, medical facilities and support, whilst creating employment through the increased plantation of the nearby Pine Forests, which grew some 822%

1974 – 1991                                   In 1975 the Herdade was nationalised, and the Atlantic Company through mismanagement saw a diminished rice production which in turn forced part of the population to leave.

1991                                                  The organisation was reorganized and began the re-evaluation of the local patrimony including natural urbanisation and agriculture production.

2004                                                  The name changed to Herdade da Comporta with the main objectives of the organization becoming agriculture and first class tourism. Both objectives have proven successful with HdC achieving a first class name for high quality tourism throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
